 | Introduction: Chitosan is a natural product which is derived from the polysaccharide chitin. Chitin is an aminopolysaccharide (combination of sugar and protein) an abundantly available natural biopolymer found in the exo-skeletons of crustacean like shrimp, crabs, lobster and other shellfish. Partial deacetylation of chitin to remove acetyl groups present in chitin gives us chitosan.
Chitosan has the unique ability to attach itself to lipids or fats as such chitosan is typically used as dietary supplements for reducing cholesterol levels and promoting weight loss. There are no calories in Chitosan since it is a non-digestible fiber. |
Chemistry: Chitosan is formed through N-deacylation of the chitin molecule. Some chemical properties of Chitosan: |
- Reactive amino groups
- Bacteriostatic and fungistatic effect
- Linear polyamine (poly-D-gulconsamine)
- Protein separations
- Chelates many transitional metal ions

Speciality of Chitosan: Chitosan is a positively charged compound, it is able to attract and bind to fatty acids (which carry a negative charge). As such, chitosan can absorb up to 4-6 times its weight in fat (including cholesterol) and prevent that fat from being absorbed into the body. This means that for every gram of chitosan that is consumed as a supplement, it will prevent the absorption of approximation 4-6 grams of fat.

Pharmacokinesis: Chitosan attaches itself to fat in the stomach before it is digested, thus trapping the fat and preventing its absorption by the digestive tract. Fat in turn binds to the Chitosan fiber, forming a mass which the body cannot absorb, and which is then eliminated by the body.Chitosan fiber, differs from other fibers in that it possesses a positive ionic charge, which gives it the ability to bond chemically with the negatively charged lipids, fats and bile acids.

USES OF CHITOSAN:
- Chitosan is used in fields as diverse as health care to agriculture to dyes for fabrics ie;
- Water Waste Treatment: removal of metal ions and coagulants like dye etc.
- Food Industry: As preservative, Color Stabilizer.
- Medical Bandages, Contact Lens and other equipments.
- Biotechnology: Enzyme Immobilization, Cell Recovery, Chromography.
- Agriculture: Seed coating, Fertilizer, Controlled Agrochemical Release.
- Cosmetics: Moisturizer, Creams, Lotion.
- Pulp and Paper: Surface treatment, Photographic paper.
- Chitosan is useful as a polymer carrier for catalysts and for intermediate products for synthesis of fine chemicals.
- Many researches conducted by companies have documented the successfull use of products made with chitosan as part of weight loss program.
- As a dietary supplement, Chitosan has been marketed for about 20 years in Europe and Japan as a fat blocker and for cholesterol control. When combined with a sensisble diet and moderate excercise, Chitosan can work with body help eliminate unwanted fat.
