Chitin is made from shellfish such as shrimp, crab, insects, or mollusk (e.g. squid cartilage), or cell walls of eumycetes.
Usually, chitin is extracted and made from shrimp and crab shells. It does not dissolve in normal weak inorganic acid, organic solvent, or lye, but it dissolves in strong inorganic acid, with degradation of molecular chain during the course of dissolution.
Chitin is the basic raw material for chitosan, glucosamine, hydrochloride, etc. usually appeared to be flakes or small tablets (3mm-5mm).
